How to Scan a QR Code on iPhone: 3 Easy Ways

By the QR Code Scan Kit team at BUILDLANESFirst published 3 min read

Short answer

Open the Camera app, point it at the QR code and tap the yellow link that appears. You don't need an app for that. If nothing shows up, turn on Settings › Camera › Scan QR Codes, or use the Scan Code control in Control Center.

Quick steps 3

  1. 01

    Open the Camera app

Use the normal photo mode. You don't need to take a picture.

  2. 02

Point it at the QR code

Hold the iPhone so the whole code is on screen, about 15 to 30 cm (6 to 12 inches) away.

  3. 03

    Tap the yellow button

A yellow button shows what the code holds, such as a website or a Wi-Fi network. Tap it to open it.

Your iPhone can already read QR codes. There are three ways to do it, and each one is better at something. This guide walks through all three, with the settings to check when nothing happens.

Way 1: the Camera app

This is the fastest way, and it works on any iPhone made in the last several years.

  1. Open Camera. You can open it from the Home Screen, the Lock Screen or Control Center.
  2. Point the back camera at the QR code. Keep the whole code on screen.
  3. Wait a second. A yellow button appears with what the code holds: a website address, a Wi-Fi network, a contact and so on.
  4. Tap the button to open it.

Don’t tap the shutter. You don’t need a photo.

Apple describes the same steps in its own help article, Scan a QR code with your iPhone or iPad.

If the yellow button never shows

Check that QR scanning is switched on:

  • Open Settings › Camera.
  • Turn on Scan QR Codes.

If it’s already on and nothing happens, the problem is usually the light, the distance or the code itself. We cover the fixes in QR code not working on iPhone.

Way 2: the Scan Code control in Control Center

Control Center has a dedicated scanner. It opens straight to a scanning view, with a torch button for dark places, so it’s handy for menus in dim restaurants.

To add it once:

  1. Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center.
  2. Touch and hold an empty spot (or tap + in the top-left corner), then tap Add a Control.
  3. Find Scan Code and add it.

From then on, open Control Center and tap the scanner icon. Older iOS versions call it Code Scanner and add it from Settings › Control Center instead. You can also find it by typing “code scanner” in Search.

It works like the Camera: hold the code in view, then tap the link that appears. Like the Camera, it shows only a short preview of where a link goes.

Way 3: a scanner app

For a code you trust, the Camera is enough. A scanner app is worth it when you want more than a quick tap:

  • See the full address before it opens. QR code scams work by sending you to a site that looks real. Seeing the whole link, not just a short preview, is a strong defence. More on that in how to spot a fake QR code.
  • Read barcodes. Product barcodes, ISBNs on books, parcel labels and tickets.
  • Scan from photos and screenshots without extra steps.
  • Keep a history of what you scanned, so you can find that Wi-Fi password or menu again.

QR Code Scan Kit does all of these. It opens straight on the camera, shows the real address of every link with a warning for common tricks (look-alike letters, hidden redirects), joins Wi-Fi in one tap and reads QR codes plus 16 barcode formats. Scanning is free, it works offline, and there’s no account to make.

Which way should you use?

You want to Best way
Open a menu or a poster once Camera app
Scan in the dark, or very often Scan Code in Control Center
Check a link before it opens A scanner app that shows the full address
Read a barcode or a code in a screenshot A scanner app

Tips for a clean scan

  • Distance: start about 15 to 30 cm away, then move closer or further until the code is sharp. Big posters need more distance, not less.
  • Light: glare and shadows are the main reasons a code fails. Tilt the phone a little or turn on the torch.
  • Lens: wipe the camera lens. A thumbprint is enough to blur a small code.
  • Screens: when the code is on a monitor, lower the screen brightness or step back to avoid stripes.

Questions

Do I need an app to scan QR codes on iPhone?

No. The Camera app and the Scan Code control in Control Center read QR codes on any recent iPhone. An app helps if you want to see the full link before it opens, keep a history, read barcodes or scan codes from photos in one tap.

Why does my iPhone camera not scan QR codes?

The most common reason is that Scan QR Codes is turned off in Settings › Camera. Other causes are a dirty lens, poor light, holding the phone too close, or a damaged code. Our guide on QR codes that won't scan covers every fix.

Can an iPhone scan barcodes too?

The Camera app is made for QR codes. It doesn't show anything useful for most shop barcodes such as EAN-13 or UPC-A. For those you need a barcode scanner app.

How do I scan a QR code that's on my own iPhone screen?

Take a screenshot, then open it in Photos and use Live Text, or pick the screenshot from inside a scanner app. The full steps are in our guide on scanning a QR code from a screenshot.
