Do you need a QR scanner app on iPhone?
Short answer
For a QR code you trust, no: the iPhone Camera app reads it for free. A scanner app is worth it when you want to see the full address before a link opens, read shop barcodes, scan codes from photos in one step, keep a history or make your own codes.

When the Camera app is enough
Menus, posters and a friend's Wi-Fi code: open the Camera, point it at the code and tap the yellow button. If nothing appears, turn on Settings › Camera › Scan QR Codes. The Scan Code control in Control Center does the same with a torch for dark rooms. Our guide How to scan a QR code on iPhone shows all three ways.
When a scanner app helps
- Codes in public places. Fake stickers on parking meters and parcels lead to look-alike payment pages. Seeing the whole address first is a strong defence. See how to spot a fake QR code.
- Barcodes. Books, food, parcels and stock. The Camera app doesn't act on most of them.
- Screenshots and chats. A scanner app reads a code from a picture without extra steps. See scan a QR code from a screenshot.
- Finding it again. A history means the Wi-Fi password or the event link is still there next week.
- Making codes. A Wi-Fi code for guests or a code for your shop window, made on the phone.
How to check any scanner app before you install it
A QR scanner sees everything you point it at, so pick one carefully. On the App Store page, look at four things:
- App Privacy. "Data Used to Track You" means data is shared with other companies for ads. Several of the most downloaded free scanners list it (checked October 2026). QR Code Scan Kit has none.
- Ads. Many free scanners show ads after each scan. QR Code Scan Kit shows no third-party ads.
- In-App Purchases. The App Store page lists them before you install. QR Code Scan Kit is free to download; the extra features in Scan Kit Pro and their prices are shown in the app before you buy.
- Codes that expire. Some QR generators make "dynamic" codes that stop working when a trial ends. Codes made in QR Code Scan Kit are static and never expire.
Where QR Code Scan Kit is not the right pick
- You need dynamic QR codes you can edit after printing, or scan statistics. It only makes static codes.
- You need allergen, halal or price checks. It doesn't do them.
- You want your history synced to the cloud or a web dashboard. History stays on the phone.
